Report: HISI 14th Annual Conference
Ireland's premier healthcare informatics event took place on 18th and 19th November 2009, Stillorgan Park Hotel, Stillorgan Co. Dublin.

Recognised for providing a significant contribution to the development and understanding of information and its associated technologies in the delivery of healthcare, the conference is the focal point for those interested in Healthcare Informatics in Ireland to network with their peers and learn about the latest developments in Healthcare ICT. One of the highlights of this year's HISI Conference was the publication of a report by the Healthcare ICT Industry Group, ICT's Role in Healthcare Transformation. This report was delivered to the Minister for Health and Children, Ms. Mary Harney T.D. during the plenary session of the conference. The report details the potential benefits associated with the implementation of a national health ICT infrastructure and sets forth nine recommendations towards its implementation.

In keeping with event tradition, we were very pleased to have as a keynote speaker the winner of the US CEO of the year award for information technology, Dr. Edward G. Murphy, President and Chief Executive Officer of Carilion Clinic and Professor of Medicine at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. The session was chaired by Mr. Denis Doherty, President of the Health Management Institute of Ireland. Below are the profiles of this year's keynote speakers:

Mary Harney
Mary Harney
Mary Harney was appointed as Minister for Health and Children in September 2004, and reappointed following the 2007 General Election. Previously, she was Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment from 1997 to 2002 and was re-appointed in June 2002, making history as the first woman to hold the title of Tánaiste and also to serve a second successive term. She served as leader of the Progressive Democrats Party from 1993 to 2006.

H. Stephen Lieber is President and CEO of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). Additionally, Lieber is one of the founders of the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology and the Health Information Technology Standards Panel, which are both U.S. federally-funded initiatives supporting the U.S. interoperability effort. As a nationally known commentator on health policy in general and specifically healthcare IT trends and issues, Lieber is a regular speaker and contributor to corporate strategic planning efforts, government-sponsored policy efforts, private sector initiatives and other non-profit organizations.

Dr. Edward G. Murphy
Edward G Murphy
Dr. Edward G. Murphy is President and Chief Executive Officer of Carilion Clinic and Professor of Medicine at the newly organised Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. He obtained his medical degree, from Harvard Medical School, graduating Cum Laude. He has served as a clinical professor at the University of Albany School of Public Health, and Adjunct Assistant Professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute School of Management.

Prof. Dr. Med. Björn Bergh
Dr Bjorn Bergh
Prof. Dr. med. Björn Bergh is Chairman, Center of Information Technology and Medical Engineering and Professor for Medical Information Systems – University Hospital and Medical Faculty Heidelberg, Germany. He studied medicine and mathematics and concluded an education in Diagnostic Radiology at the Charité University Hospital Berlin and also headed its Digital Radiology unit until 1998. From 1999 until 2003 he was acting CIO of the University Hospital Frankfurt.

    Implementation of Electronic Health Records (EHR)

    EHR Implement Implementation of Electronic Health Records (EHR) at a national level constitutes a radical innovation for health care. Along with technical challenges, EHR implementations face several political, social and organizational issues which are often overlooked. Acknowledging that EHR success needs to engage all stakeholders, manage organizational changes and alleviate resistance, the EHR-IMPLEMENT project aims to examine political, social and organizational factors influencing large scale EHR implementations, and to identify best practices.

    Electronic Health Care Record systems Quality Control
    EHR QTNEHR-QTN intends to prepare the Health Community across Europe for more systematic, comparable and large scale quality assurance and certification of e-Health products (with a special emphasis on Electronic Health Care Record systems).

    HIMSS Europe Governing Council Meeting
    HIMSS logoHIMSS Europe is dedicated to bringing together all the major players in the Health ICT community to transcend borders and languages and engender a truly regional dialogue. As members of HIMSS Europe, individual professionals (managers, administrators, clinicians, technology experts and users), vendor companies and IT providers meet, interact and learn from one another.
